Ninety minutes is a natural beat

They are the trough announcing itself, and they exist so you will rest before the next climb.

How your phone breaks every cycle
A notification does not wait for a convenient moment. It lands wherever you happen to be in the wave. Three steps to use the cycle again
- Log one morning: change nothing, just note when attention is best and worst. Most people spot a pattern near the 90-minute mark once they start looking.
- Protect the climb: mark 60 to 80 minutes as uninterruptible, put the phone out of sight, and silence notifications rather than trusting self-control.
- Actually rest in the trough: take 5 to 15 minutes away from screens to walk or look at something far away. Any app with a feed is not a rest, even when it feels like one.
Why scrolling a little less does not help
The issue is timing, not total minutes. Ten minutes of scrolling in a trough looks cheap. It costs the entire recovery window, so the next cycle starts from a lower baseline. That explains a pattern plenty of people report: they scroll less than they used to, yet finish the day with less output than before. Total screen time went down. Interference with the rhythm went up. There is a second effect too. A feed is built to keep you past the trough, so ten minutes rarely stays ten.
