Why time limits do not work
The first move most people make is adding a screen time limit in settings. Two weeks later the limit is still there and the number has not moved. The reason is straightforward: the reminder is skippable, and a skippable reminder does not change behaviour. It only gives you the wrong conclusion about your own discipline.
Cutting time in half comes from changing autoplay and where the app sits, not from setting a ceiling.
Get the real number first
Open your screen time report and read the seven-day daily average. Not your impression of it. Most people find they had the two apps in the wrong order. Write both numbers on a sticky note so you can compare them in a week.
What to do over seven days
- Day one: turn off TikTok notifications. All of them, including messages.
- Day two: move the icon off the first screen into a folder on the second. Add one step of friction.
- Day three: pick one window of the day when scrolling is allowed, and keep to that window.
- Days four to six: fill the old scrolling slot with something specific. A walk, washing up, stretching. Specific matters more than productive.
- Day seven: go back to the screen time report, compare the two numbers, and decide which single rule to keep.
Why keep only one rule
Seven rules at once rarely survive three days. Keeping the single rule that moved the number most, and holding it for a month, beats seven rules that collapse in rotation. For most people that rule is either disabling autoplay or moving the icon.
FAQ
- Is deleting an app better? Not always. If both apps take time, removing one usually just moves the time to the other.
- Are time limits useless? The ones that require a password to override work. The ones you can dismiss in one tap do almost nothing.
- Should I restart after a bad day? No. Read the weekly average, not a single day.
