YouTube Shorts
TV was built for passive consumption. You sit down, you watch a show, you get up for snacks. YouTube Shorts do not work like that. Each clip is under a minute and the next one is already queued before you have finished reacting to the last.
Why the loop is different
Television has natural stopping points. Ad breaks, episode endings, scene changes. Those pauses are where you decide whether to keep watching. Shorts removed them. There is no gap wide enough to make a decision in, so the decision never gets made.
The reward schedule does the rest. Every swipe is a small hit of novelty, and the swipe is the only action required. Your thumb learns the pattern faster than your judgement can interrupt it.
Four changes that actually helped
- Set a hard timer before you open the app. Ten minutes, and the timer runs whether you are watching or not.
- Turn autoplay off. It sounds trivial. It is not, because it turns every next video into a deliberate choice.
- Move the app off your home screen. You do not have to delete it. Distance is usually enough.
- Give the bored moment somewhere else to go. A short-form habit fills a gap that something else has to fill.
The goal is not to quit Shorts. It is to decide when you open them, instead of finding out that you already did.
