Your phone says "9 hours of screen time today" — almost meaningless. Six are work, three are doomscrolling. Splitting recreational vs productive screen time is step one of managing screens at all.

Why the split matters

  • Work screen time is output; cutting it hurts productivity. Leisure screen time is the negotiable part.
  • Lumped together, you think "I worked all day." Split apart, the truth is short video ate half of it.
  • Different yardsticks: work screens are judged by focus; leisure screens by awareness.

How to split it

  • iOS: Settings → Screen Time → per-app breakdown (social/video = leisure; office/reading = productive)
  • Android: Settings → Digital Wellbeing → same categories
  • Simple rule: produces output = productive; pure consumption = leisure

Once split, the truth is obvious: usually only the leisure slice needs managing. Give it a quota and let PausePaw gently stop you at the limit — no quitting, just knowing which slice to cut.
