There is a simple explanation for why your cat abandons a perfectly good bed to sleep across your keyboard, and it is not spite.
Cats have a resting body temperature of roughly 38 to 39 degrees Celsius, higher than ours, and they are markedly less efficient than humans at retaining that heat. Their ideal ambient temperature for comfort sits several degrees above what most of us keep our homes at. A laptop running for an hour radiates exactly the kind of gentle, localised warmth a cat is built to seek out. It is not that your cat chose the keyboard over the bed. It is that the keyboard is a better heat source, and the bed is not.
This is the same reason cats gravitate to laundry fresh from the dryer, to the top of a refrigerator, to a windowsill in direct sun, and to the space directly in front of a space heater. In each case the animal is solving a thermal problem with the tools available.
**The social layer**
Warmth alone does not explain everything, because cats also choose spots that are warm *and* occupied. A cat that sleeps on your lap while you work is not merely harvesting heat. Cats are social sleepers. In a multi-cat household, cats that have a good relationship will often sleep in physical contact, and a cat that chooses to sleep against you is making a statement about the relationship, not just about the temperature.
The keyboard sits at the intersection of both drives. It is the warmest patch of the house, and it is the place where your attention is already focused. From the cat's point of view, this is the single best real estate in the building.
**Why the inconvenient spot specifically**
Cats also prefer elevated, enclosed, or central positions where they can observe without being observed. A keyboard in front of a screen on a desk is elevated, is central to the household's activity, and gives a clear sightline to the door. Add the heat, add the attention, and you have an irresistible location.
If you want your cat to stop using the laptop as a bed, do not push it away. Give it a better version of the same thing: a heated pad on a raised platform near your desk. Cats do not respond well to being displaced, but they respond very well to being offered a superior alternative on their own terms.
**What the behaviour is not**
It is worth saying plainly that sleeping on your keyboard is not a sign that your cat is unwell, cold in a dangerous way, or neglected. It is normal feline thermoregulation plus normal feline sociability. Watch for changes in the pattern - a cat that suddenly seeks heat obsessively, or that stops seeking it entirely - but the behaviour itself is a healthy one.
The keyboard belongs to the cat now. The reasonable move is to buy a second keyboard.
