How PausePaw works is a short answer, and it is not the answer most screen-time tools give. There is no daily score to check at midnight and no report waiting at the end of the week. A rule watches what you are doing, and when you drift into something on the list, a small animal appears with a countdown you cannot dismiss. When the countdown ends, the tab goes quiet for a few minutes. That is the whole loop, and PausePaw explained in one sentence is this: it interrupts the reflex instead of measuring the damage afterwards.
The three parts
- A rule. You name the sites or apps, and when they apply. Rules can follow a time of day, or they can follow what you are working on.
- An interruption. The mascot arrives before the block does. You get a pause you can notice, not a wall from the first second.
- A break. A short enforced gap, long enough to look away from the screen and short enough that you do not go hunting for the off switch.
Order matters here. Tools that start with the wall train you to avoid the wall. PausePaw starts with the interruption because a break you keep installed beats a lock you fight within a fortnight.
What happens in the first minute
Install, name three sites, pick a window. Most people pick the two hours after lunch, because that is where the afternoon tends to go. The first time a rule fires you will notice two things: the countdown does not care that you were in the middle of something, and the pause is shorter than you expected. Both are deliberate.
Why the countdown cannot be dismissed
A reminder you can wave away is a reminder you will wave away, and you will do it faster each time. The countdown is fixed on purpose. It is also short on purpose, because a long enforced break is the version people uninstall.
How it compares to a hard blocker
| PausePaw | Hard blocker | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts with | A reminder, then a pause | A lock |
| Rules follow | The task in front of you | The clock |
| Can be ended early | The pause cannot | No, by design |
| Failure mode | You tighten one rule | You find a way around it |
What PausePaw does not do
- Track your phone. It runs in the browser on the machine you work at. Phone blocking is a separate problem and a separate tool.
- Score your day. If you want one number to watch, there are better apps for that.
- Pretend it cannot be bypassed. Anything on a computer you own can be bypassed. The useful question is how much friction it costs.
FAQ
- How long is the pause? Short by default, and yours to change. Long enough to look up from the screen, short enough that you do not go looking for the off switch.
- Can I stop a session early? The pause runs once it starts. You can change the rule afterwards, which is the point: the fix is one edit, not a support ticket.
- Does it work offline? Rules run locally in the browser, so yes. Nothing needs to reach a server for a pause to fire.
- Is the free tier enough? It covers base rules and reminders. Pro is for people who run out of rules, not for people who need the basics to work.
Install it, name three sites, and let it run through your worst hour. PausePaw lives at pause-paw.shop, and you can start from the home page, set your first rule in the app, and read the longer version of how the habit forms in the first post on the blog.
