Most study advice assumes you lack discipline. The students I hear from lack the opposite. They have plenty of it, spent in the wrong hours: two good hours from ten in the morning, then four hours of half-reading with a feed open in the next tab. A pause-paw.shop setup for students does not add willpower. It draws a line around the tab that eats the afternoon.
Anyone searching for pausepaw for studying usually has an exam inside ten days and a browser that keeps offering alternatives. Below is a setup that takes about two minutes, then a day shape that fits how attention actually behaves.
The two-minute setup
- Name the four sites that cost you the afternoon. Four, not twenty. A long list becomes a list you argue with, and you win that argument every time.
- Bind the rule to your revision window, not only to the clock. If you revise between ten and twelve, that window is the rule.
- Leave one tab open on purpose. A total lockdown trains you to route around it. One deliberate exception keeps the rule believable.
- Pick the shortest pause that still interrupts. Thirty seconds is usually enough to notice you have drifted.
Then stop configuring. Setup is not studying, and it is unusually good at pretending to be.
Why ninety minutes
Attention runs in cycles of roughly ninety minutes, longer first thing and shorter once lunch has passed. Work inside one cycle, then take a break that counts: walk, eat, look out of a window. Scrolling is not a break in any sense that matters, because it keeps the same loop turning.
Two cycles before lunch and one after is a full day for most people. Students who schedule four usually find the fourth one has been reading the same paragraph for fifty minutes.
A revision day, hour by hour
| Time | What happens | PausePaw setting |
|---|---|---|
| 09:50 | Write the single task for the first block, on paper | Rule already active |
| 10:00-11:30 | First ninety-minute cycle | Sites stopped, pause on trigger |
| 11:30-12:15 | A real break, away from the desk | Rule off |
| 12:15-13:45 | Second cycle, usually the weakest of the three | Rule on |
| 15:00-16:30 | A third cycle if the day needs one | Rule on |
What to do when the pause fires
The pause is thirty seconds of nothing, and what you do with those seconds decides whether the rule helps. Read the sentence you last wrote. If it still makes sense, carry on. If it does not, you stopped reading ten minutes ago and the tab next door was already open in your head.
- Leave one line about where you are. Eight seconds, and it makes restarting after the break far cheaper.
- Check nothing during the pause. Checking is the exact motion the pause exists to interrupt.
- Three pauses in ten minutes means ending the block. That is information about the block, not a verdict on you.
FAQ
- Does this work for group study? Rules are per browser, so everyone installs their own. A shared start time does more for a session than shared settings do.
- What about the machine in the library? Install it there too. Rules run locally, so nothing has to sync for a pause to fire.
- Will it stop research I actually need? Name sites rather than categories. The four tabs that eat your afternoon get stopped and the rest of the browser keeps working.
- Is the free tier enough for a term? It covers base rules and reminders, which is everything this guide uses.
Two minutes of setup, then one honest cycle before lunch. PausePaw is at pause-paw.shop. Start from the home page, write the first rule in the app, and for how to arrange the day around those cycles, read deep work versus shallow work.
