A new year digital detox usually fails by the third week of January, and it fails for a boring reason: the plan was written for somebody with no job and no existing habits. Delete every app on 1 January, hold out nine days, reinstall on the tenth with a sense of failure. The people who get somewhere do the opposite. They close one window, hold it for four weeks, and add the second change only once the first stops needing willpower.
January is also the hardest month to attempt a hard reset, which is why a january digital detox has to be smaller than the one you would run in June. Short daylight, cold, work piled up after the break. A plan that ignores that gets dropped the first week anything else goes wrong.
Why all-or-nothing dies in week two
A ban removes the thing and leaves the gap it was filling. By Tuesday of week two the gap has been filled by something else, usually the same app on a different device or a browser tab nobody wrote a rule for. Willpower is not the scarce resource here. Attention is, and a ban spends all of it inside the first four days.
A window works differently, because it ends the session for you. You do not decide to stop at 23:10. The page asks for a ten-second pause and the moment passes.
The four weeks
- Week one: close one window. 22:30 to 07:30 on every device you control. Nothing else changes. One rule, one week, no tracking.
- Week two: put friction in front of the phone. Another room overnight, or a drawer. Charging it beside the bed is what turns eleven o'clock scrolling into one o'clock scrolling.
- Week three: write the site list. Four sites, not twenty. The four where you actually lose the time. Add a rule that pauses them inside the window from week one.
- Week four: read the numbers. Ten minutes on a Sunday, out loud if anybody else is in the house. The looking is the habit, not the figure.
Four weeks, four changes, and none of them requires deleting anything. The test is simple: if a week's change still needs a decision every evening by week three, it was too big and should be halved.
What the numbers usually show
| Week | What moves | What does not |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sleep, within about four days | Total daily screen time |
| 2 | Morning phone use | Evening use on the phone |
| 3 | Time on the four listed sites | Everything not on the list |
| 4 | Whether the window held without being enforced | Weekend totals |
Sleep moving first is the reason to keep going. It is the only change people report noticing before the habit exists, and it arrives well before the totals do anything.
FAQ
- I already broke the plan on 3 January. Start that day instead. A detox that begins on the fourth is the same as one that began on the first, and waiting for next January costs eleven months.
- Is a month long enough to change a habit? Long enough to change a schedule, which is the part that holds. The habit tends to follow the schedule rather than the other way round.
- My work runs late on a laptop. Put work domains inside the window an hour after you stop, and leave the laptop out of the overnight rule. Closing the day is the point. A rule you override every night is not a rule.
- Do I have to delete social apps? No. Nothing in this plan asks you to delete anything, and the plans that do are the ones that get reversed in week two.
PausePaw runs in the browser at pause-paw.shop. Install it from the home page, write the week-one window in the app, then put your own numbers next to where the line between phone habit and phone addiction sits and whether quitting at once or easing off works better. Browser support and pricing are both on the FAQ page.
